![]() Bob Beggs-SKIPPER
Bob was born in Manchester and joined the British Army in 1979, where he went on to join 29 Commando Regiment R.A. Bob, is currently Director of Performance Yachting and has over 150,000 miles under his belt. He is undoubtedly one of the most experienced instructors in the country who has completed many sailing and racing adventures to date. In 1992, Bob completed the Europe 1 STAR (Single-handed Transatlantic Yacht Race) and came 1st in class under a sponsored entry “Sharing the Challenge”. In July 1993, Bob completed the Teeside Two-Handed Round Britain and Ireland Race after which he left the Army to pursue the quest for challenging adventures. Bob soon built a 26ft Dazcat Catamaran, and it was not long before Clarks International were secured as the main Sponsor for the 1994 Plymouth Development Corporation, Two-Handed Transatlantic race. Bob raced hard and came 1st in class, sponsored entry 'Clarks Active Air'. In June 1995, The Gelert Three Peaks Race saw Bob finish a respecable 3rd place, again with 'Clarks Active Air'. Bob worked as a BT Global Challenge Skipper before his next conquest in 1996, the Europe 1 STAR, Single Handed Trans-Atlantic Race, where Bob again duly finished 1st in class with Clarks Active Air as sponsor. Bob's real moment of Glory came in 2000-2001 when selected as a skipper for the Times Clipper 2000 Round the World Yacht Race, Bob was declared the winning round the world Skipper on Bristol Clipper. Since then he has been placed in 2002 & 2006 Two-handed round Britain & Ireland Race and and completed Fastnet races. ![]() Ian Rivers- CREW
Ian joined the British Army in May 1984. He has served with 29 Commando Regiment RA, which has taken him to worldwide locations such as Belize, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. Ian loves a challenge, he started mountaineering when he first went to Norway with 29 Commando Regiment RA in 1986. Since then he has climbed extensively in Europe, Africa, North and South America and he was also part of the 'Army on Everest' team. When he heard about Bob's world record attempt of the North West Passage and North American circumnavigation, he was keen to get on board. His expertise will certainly be put to good use. Team Role: Mountain and artic survival and equipment expert. Shaun Robertson- CREW
Shaun joined the Army in 1981 and served with 29 Commando Regiment RA for 12 years. During this time he served in Norway, Northern Ireland, Belize, Canada and Iraq. He is a keen outdoor enthusiast, skilled in various activities including, caving, mountaineering, sailing and sea kayaking. He has previous experience of the NWP having previously completed 2 solo expeditions in a folding sea kayak. Currently he co-owns and runs a successful height safety company teaching climbing, access and rescue to industry and the emergency services.He completed a two-handed transat delivery with Bob on Tiki a 26ft yacht back in 1996. His clear expertise in the North West Passage will certainly be an advantage. Team Role: Shaun will also be helping to pursue sponsorship leads. Darren Thompson- CREW
Darren joined the Army in 1982, serving with 29 Commando regiment RA from 1983 to 1996. He served in variety of diverse environments and countries such as Belize, Norway, Canada, Northern Ireland, Iraq, Turkey, Europe, Africa and USA. He has a passion for the ‘cold climes’ and he has skied the Jotunhiemen, Hardangervidda and Metubba national parks (Norway). He completed the Vasa Loppett (Sweden) 90 km ski endurance race, plus various other sporting events and challenges. He enjoys all outdoor sports and pursuits such as, sports parachuting, Autogyros, Kayaking, Running, Mountaineering, Swimming and Rowing in which he is a Concept 2 Crew Class Coach. Generally he won't say no to being tried, tested and challenged!
Team roles: Boat Builder, Rowing provision and Nutrition Coordinator (with Carnegie University).
