![]() PartnersCarnegie Research Institute Leeds Metropolitan University John O’Hara – Physiologist John O’Hara is a senior lecturer in sport & exercise science at Leeds Metropolitan University and is a British Association of Sport & Exercise Science (BASES) accredited Sports & Exercise Scientist for Sport Science Support (Physiology). John recently led the provision of sport science support to help the British Army in their preparations for their attempt to ascend the West Ridge of Everest in 2006. He is now part of the Leeds Met team providing sport science support to Dee Caffari in her preparations for the Vendée Globe 2008. His research interests include carbohydrate consumption, hydration and the use of nutritional supplements in sport, specifically, the use of different types of carbohydrates prior to exercise and the effects these have on blood variables, endurance performance and fuel utilisation. He also holds an interest in hydration within an occupational setting. Other areas of research interest include limiting factors on sports performance and the preparation of athletes for sporting challenges.
John is initially putting Bob through a series of physiological assessments including: the assessment of body composition, the assessment of haemoglobin levels, the measurement of heart rate and blood lactate, responses to incremental exercise and the measurement of maximal oxygen uptake to support of the project against the floe This information will enable the Leeds Met team to prescribe appropriate training to ensure Bob and the crew are fully prepared
Louise Sutton – Nutritionist ![]() Registered dietician Louise Sutton is a principal lecturer in sport and exercise nutrition at Leeds Metropolitan University with a particular interest in the practical application of sport dietetics. She is a member of the European Health and Fitness Association Board, the Health and Fitness Technical Expert Group of SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning in the UK, and is an Advisor to the Register of Sport and Exercise Nutritionists. Her research interests include physical activity promotion and the practical application of sport dietetics in elite and extreme environments. Louise recently led the provision of nutrition support to the British Army in their preparations for their attempt to ascend the West Ridge of Everest in 2006, and has over the past 15 years advised many elite sports professionals from a range of sports. Currently she is putting Dee Caffari through an intensive programme of nutrition education to assist in meeting the nutritional demands of training and the challenge of the Vendee Globe. Louise is putting together the nutrition programme together for Bob and his crew for the 'againstthefloe' project. The environment, limited cooking and storage facilities coupled with demand for enough calorific and nutritional content will pose a challenge.
