The Boat

The yacht is from the design board of Darren Newton (MultiMarine) and is being built in Plymouth.  The 8.5m Dazcat has been specifically designed for the journey and is a hybrid of Darren and Bob’s “Clarks Active Air”. Originally with Clarks Shoes sponsorship, Active Air was to compete in both the Two-handed Trans-Atlantic Race and the Ostar, winning in class and thus proving her ocean going creditability.  She also competed in the Three Peaks Race gaining a creditable third place.

The choice of vessel was chosen with the following criteria:
  • Lightweight - to enable the crew to drag the craft up the beach or on to the ice if required.  We will be fitting oars and seats to allow rowing on occasion if becalmed.
  • High power to weight ratio - to enable sailing in the lightest of breezes.Proven seagoing ability.
  • Fast for long ocean passage making
The Dazcat 28 moulds - The bread and butter of the project

These moulds are nearly 20 years old and have kindly been loaned to Bob’s Against The Floe challenge by Darren Newton of Multimarine Composites Ltd. Please take the time to view Darren’s website at www.multimarine.co.uk for an extremely interesting history of what these two moulds have produced and what Darren and his team have gone on to develop!!  Although these moulds have been sat outside for many years they are in great condition and after a clean, polish and the eviction of a few ‘freeloading’ spiders we will be able to build off them immediately! A clear testimony to the professionalism, dedication and craftsmanship that Darren and his team at Multimarine put into their products, large and small.
